Passport photo sizes.
Check the file you have.

A US visa photo and a UK passport photo need different files. Choose your application to check dimensions, size and format against the published requirements.

Check your photo file

Choose your application, then check the original photo. Nothing is uploaded or changed.

These are visa requirements, not online passport-renewal rules. Check the official examples, sRGB color and compression requirements before submitting.

This checker reads JPEG, PNG and WebP files up to 20 MB. A readable file is not necessarily an accepted application format.

Your file's dimensions, size and format will appear here.

This checks file properties only. It cannot assess your face, lighting, background, photo age, color profile, compression ratio or whether edits were made. Passing these checks does not confirm acceptance.

Checked against official sources on 6 September 2026. Size checks use 1 KB = 1,000 bytes and 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes; follow the portal if its calculation differs.

Digital requirements by application

These apply to the specific online applications listed here. Paper applications, first-time passports and other visa types may use different rules. Width is listed before height.

Applying for an Indian passport? Check Passport Seva or your embassy's application instructions. Domestic appointments and overseas applications can use different photo-submission processes; a generic pixel preset is not enough to establish the right requirement.

What to do with a failed check

Too few pixels: Find the original camera file. A copy saved from messaging or a screenshot may be smaller. Enlarging it cannot restore lost detail.

Wrong format or file size: First check whether edits are permitted. For Canadian online renewal, ask your photographer for a digital file meeting the specifications. For the UK, use an unaltered original or the photo code provided by your booth or shop.

Wrong shape: Confirm the application type before cropping. A square US visa image will not meet Canada's portrait dimensions. Follow the authority's crop instructions and examples.

For applications that explicitly permit resizing or conversion, the image editor lets you enter dimensions and choose the output format. Keep the original, inspect the exported file and run the check again.

Print size is different from pixel size

A 2×2-inch print describes physical size. A 600×600-pixel file describes an image grid. DPI connects them only when a print or scan workflow specifies it: 2 inches at 300 DPI gives 600 pixels.

For online forms, follow the stated pixel dimensions and byte limit. Changing a DPI tag alone does not add pixels, reduce file size or correct the framing.

Check the photo itself before submitting

The file checker cannot tell whether a face is correctly positioned or a background is acceptable. Compare your photo with the official examples, including the permitted expression, head size, lighting and photo age.

UK instructions require an unaltered photo. Canadian online renewal also requires a commercial photographer and prohibits alterations. Do not automatically retouch, replace the background or remove metadata as a passport-preparation step.

Common photo-file questions

What is the US passport photo size in pixels?

Application type matters. The US visa digital-image rules specify a square JPEG between 600×600 and 1200×1200 pixels, up to 240 KB. Those are not the rules for online passport renewal. Open the instructions for your exact application.

Can I check a passport photo on my phone?

Yes. Choose your application and select a JPEG, PNG or WebP photo above. PixelFix reads the file in your browser and reports its dimensions, byte size and format without uploading or editing it.

Does passing the file checks mean my photo will be accepted?

No. These checks cover file properties only. The issuing authority also checks the person, pose, background, lighting, photo age and other requirements. Use its examples and instructions before submitting.

Should I crop or compress a photo that fails?

Follow the instructions for your application before editing. UK guidance requires an unaltered photo; Canada requires an unaltered digital photo from a commercial photographer. Ask the photographer for a suitable original when needed.
